Neuromodulator Uses: Wrinkles, Excessive Sweating and Chronic Migraine
Understanding your concern comes first when considering neuromodulator injections. This guide explains neuromodulator uses, medical indications and treatment limitations.
A consultation gives you time to discuss your options. It does not commit you to receiving injections.

Understand your options before deciding
What can Neuromodulators treat?
Selected neuromodulators can soften expression lines and treat certain forms of excessive sweating. One specific medication can also help prevent migraine attacks in some adults with chronic migraine. However, each use requires assessment, and approved indications vary between products.
In this guide, neuromodulators are injectable medications containing botulinum toxin. They temporarily reduce certain nerve signals. Depending on the indication, treatment may affect muscle contractions or local sweat production.
Understanding these effects does not replace a diagnosis. Also, available medications do not necessarily share the same approved indications. Your consultation should explain the proposed product and whether its use is approved.

01 · Expression lines
Forehead Lines, Frown Lines and Crow’s Feet
These wrinkles often become more noticeable when you smile or frown. Reducing selected muscle contractions may soften them temporarily. However, wrinkle treatment does not address every cause of skin ageing.
Assessing your face at rest and in motion
An expression line differs from a crease that remains visible at rest. Examining your forehead and eyebrows helps clarify treatment possibilities. Also, mention any existing eyelid heaviness during your assessment.
For facial wrinkles, changes generally appear within a few days. The American Academy of Dermatology describes effects lasting approximately three to four months. However, individual results and duration vary.
Our page about forehead lines, frown lines and crow’s feet treatment explains these areas in more detail. It also outlines differences between treatment zones and relevant precautions.
What about dark circles or volume loss? These concerns require a different assessment. Our aesthetic medicine services include other treatment categories, each with specific indications.
02 · Lips and smile
Lip Flip and Gummy Smile treatment: different goals
A Lip Flip does not add volume
A lip flip aims to make the upper lip slightly more visible. It changes muscle activity without adding the volume provided by dermal fillers. The effect is temporary and depends on your anatomy.
However, changes in muscle activity can affect everyday movements. Drinking through a straw, speaking clearly or closing your lips may become temporarily more difficult. Therefore, mention activities such as singing or playing wind instruments.
A Gummy Smile can have several causes
Visible gum tissue depends partly on your lips, teeth and gums. A muscle injection cannot address every contributing factor. Depending on your assessment, dental advice or another approach may be more appropriate.
These concerns may involve off-label use of the proposed medication. This means the use falls outside its approved indications. Ask about the available evidence, possible risks and alternatives.

03 · Everyday comfort
Excessive Sweating: understanding Hyperhidrosis
Frequently soaked clothing or very sweaty hands can interfere with daily activities. Hyperhidrosis means sweating beyond what your body needs to regulate temperature. It should not be dismissed as a hygiene issue.
Primary and Secondary Hyperhidrosis
Excessive sweating may be primary or linked to a medication or medical condition. Its onset, location and associated symptoms help guide assessment. In particular, mention new sweating, widespread sweating or night sweats.
Depending on the findings, your physician may consider further investigations. In that situation, blood tests address a specific clinical question. They are not automatically required before every injection.
Which Excessive Sweating treatments can you discuss?
Options include antiperspirants, certain medications and iontophoresis. Injections may also temporarily reduce sweating in a targeted area. The choice depends on your symptoms, previous treatments and relevant risks.
Underarm, hand and foot sweating require separate assessments. Underarm sweating is also called axillary hyperhidrosis. Approved uses and practical limitations differ between areas, so confirm which concerns the clinic assesses.

Before your appointment, note situations where sweating affects your activities. Also, record products you have tried and their effects. Our hyperhidrosis treatment information for Laval complements the AAD’s practical self-care advice.
04 · Medical prevention
Chronic Migraine prevention requires a specific medical approach
Preventive injections for chronic migraine follow a specific medical protocol. They differ from cosmetic forehead injections. Their purpose is to reduce the burden of symptoms in suitable patients.
Chronic migraine criteria include headaches on at least 15 days monthly, for more than three months. At least eight of those days involve migraine features. A physician must also assess other diagnostic criteria and possible causes.
These criteria describe days with symptoms, rather than simply counting attacks. They do not determine treatment eligibility on their own.
Preventing attacks and treating symptoms
Preventive treatment aims to improve migraine patterns over time. It does not aim to stop an attack immediately. Therefore, acute and preventive migraine treatments address complementary needs.
Canadian migraine prevention guidelines describe several options, including oral medications and treatments targeting CGRP. The choice depends on your diagnosis, medical history and preferences. Evidence for one injectable medication does not automatically apply to other neuromodulators.
Preparing for helpful follow-up care
Record headache days, medications used and activities affected. Medical care for migraine and headaches helps put these details into context. Migraine Canada’s printable headache diaries can help you prepare.

05 · Uses requiring careful discussion
Bruxism, Masseter and Trapezius Concerns: understanding the evidence
Bruxism means clenching or grinding your teeth. However, jaw pain can have other causes. A dental examination can help identify tooth wear, muscle pain or joint problems.
For temporomandibular disorders, the NIDCR describes conflicting study results for injections. Their effectiveness for these conditions remains uncertain. This limitation should be discussed alongside available conservative approaches.
A cosmetic concern involving the masseter muscles does not necessarily indicate bruxism. Similarly, neck pain does not automatically justify trapezius injections.
The term “TrapTox” appears in cosmetic treatment discussions. However, popularity does not establish medical value. Ask which options are offered and what evidence supports them.
Depending on your concern, care from a family physician may be more appropriate. Therapeutic massage is a separate service. It does not replace an assessment of persistent pain.
Evidence and context
Two statistics to read in context
≈ 7.3 million
Cosmetic Procedures in 2025
ISAPS estimates approximately 7.3 million botulinum toxin procedures performed worldwide by plastic surgeons in 2025.
Published in 2026, the report draws on data from 2,900 surgeons. Its findings are extrapolated. They represent neither unique patients nor procedures performed by every type of injector.
≈ 40%
Headache Disorders Worldwide
According to WHO, headache disorders affected approximately 40% of the global population in 2021. The fact sheet was updated in October 2025.
This estimate covers headache disorders overall, rather than chronic migraine alone. It does not describe Quebec specifically. The fact sheet does not present a single study sample.
These figures describe populations and clinical practices. They cannot predict your response or eligibility for injections. A treatment’s popularity does not establish whether it suits your needs.
Making an informed choice
Neuromodulator side effects and precautions
Possible reactions include pain, redness, swelling or bruising at the injection site. Depending on the area, asymmetry or muscle weakness may also occur. Drooping eyelids are among the risks of injections around the eyes.
What should you tell your physician?
- Your medications, supplements and known allergies.
- Pregnancy, breastfeeding or plans to become pregnant.
- Neuromuscular conditions or difficulties swallowing or breathing.
- An infection near the proposed treatment area.
- Previous injectable products, treatment dates and any reactions.
Your physician explains the contraindications and precautions for the proposed medication. Do not stop prescribed medication without medical advice. Health Canada recommends discussing interactions and risks before receiving injections.
Difficulty breathing or swallowing after an injection requires urgent medical attention. Call 911 for emergency assistance. Serious effects from toxin spreading beyond the injection area are possible, although rare.
For aesthetic medicine, medical assessment must take place in person, as stated in CMQ guidance available in French. An online form requests an appointment; it does not confirm treatment eligibility. The Collège des médecins du Québec explains this distinction in its practice requirements.

Frequently asked questions
Neuromodulator questions before your first visit
They are different treatments. Neuromodulators temporarily change certain nerve signals, while dermal fillers can address volume concerns. Their uses and risks differ.
A deep wrinkle may remain visible despite reduced muscle movement. An assessment helps explain the expected limitations. Depending on your skin and goals, another approach may be discussed.
A lip flip mainly changes how the upper lip appears. It does not add the volume provided by dermal fillers.
Chronic migraine prevention requires a specific indication and medical protocol. Cosmetic forehead injections do not provide equivalent migraine care.
The effect is temporary and varies by treatment area and individual response. The cause of excessive sweating also needs consideration.
Your assessment determines whether injections are appropriate and which plan may be considered. An advertised price cannot replace that assessment.
Results vary, and asymmetry can occur. Describe which facial expressions you would like to preserve. Your physician will discuss the possibilities and limitations.
Yes, a consultation helps you understand your options and ask questions. You can decide against proceeding with treatment.

When another assessment may be more appropriate
Neuromodulators do not address every skin or health concern. These pages describe other clinic services. Their inclusion does not mean they should be combined with injections.
- Dermatological concerns: assess a skin lesion or symptom.
- Acne treatment: discuss breakouts and inflammatory lesions.
- Collagen biostimulators: understand another category of cosmetic treatments.
- Menopause and perimenopause: discuss symptoms associated with this stage of life.
- Health checkup: plan preventive care around your needs.
A comprehensive health checkup is not automatically required before injections. Your physician determines which investigations are appropriate.
